The Brodhead clan was one of high repute and station. Charles’ great-great-grandfather was Daniel Brodhead, a Captain in the Grenadiers under King Charles II and member of the English expedition that wrested control of New Amsterdam from the Dutch in 1664. Captain Brodhead settled in Ulster county and established an estate and family that flourished. Subsequent generations of Brodheads held positions of importance in the military, the judicial system and commerce. At some point in his education young Charles learning surveying.
