a German novelist and playwright. In 1844 Freytag's first play appeared, "The Brautfahrt or Kunz von der Rosen," a comedy about Emperor Maximilian, for which he received the prize of the Berlin court theater won. In 1847, he published the plays "The Valentine" and "Count Waldemar"; in 1854, he published comedy "The journalists' successfully. Freytag's literary fame was made universal by the publication in 1855 of his novel, Soll und Haben (Debit and Credit), which was translated into almost all European languages.
