Grand Pensionary of Zeeland (1785-1788) and of Holland (1788-1795). Van de Spiegel started a career in the Zeeland public administration at a young age. First he was mayor of Goes , later councilary of Zeeland (22-09-1785 - 24-04-1788). When the Prussian army had been restored to power in 1787 by the intervention of Prussia , William V of Orange-Nassau , the prince-minded Van de Spiegel was brought to The Hague to lead the Republic as Grand Pensionary of Holland. The following year he made an alliance with Prussia and England.
