the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and Caliph (Sunni Islam) of the Ottoman Caliphate from 1703 to 1730. He succeeded to the throne on the abdication of his brother Mustafa II. Ahmed III cultivated good relations with France, doubtless in view of Russia's menacing attitude; in fact, both his wives were Frenchwomen. Forced against his will into war with Russia, Ahmed III came nearer than any Ottoman sovereign before or since to breaking the power of his northern rival.
