If you had the ability and years of training to take a block of wood or stone and turn it into a sublime piece of art, you too could have been employed by the church, the royal court or by a monied patron. Talented sculptors were usually in high demand and one could count on regular and continuing employment if one had the skill and techniques required. Here are many who did.

Karoly Alexy

a Hungarian sculptor. His sculptural style integrated elements of classicism and romanticism. Alexy is perhaps most famous for his series of field marshal sculptures which he began in 1844. He did plan a sculpture of "King Matthias" of Hungary but it did not prove to be successful. In 1845 he worked on sculptures for the Hermina Chapel in Budapest.

Henry Hugh Armstead

an English sculptor and illustrator, influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. In the late 1850s Armstead was commissioned to make a statue of Aristotle in Caen stone for the Museum of Natural History in Oxford. After this he increasingly concentrated on sculpture rather than metalwork.

Hezekiah Augur

an early American sculptor and inventor. He was a self-taught sculptor and, unlike many other 19th-century sculptors, did not travel to Europe, but spent his entire career in New Haven. He switched to marble later in his career, being among the first native born Americans to do so.
