If you had the ability and years of training to take a block of wood or stone and turn it into a sublime piece of art, you too could have been employed by the church, the royal court or by a monied patron. Talented sculptors were usually in high demand and one could count on regular and continuing employment if one had the skill and techniques required. Here are many who did.

a German etcher, painter and sculptor. In Dresden, he studied and created portraits and scenes for the Royal Opera, and mural paintings in Schloss Hubertusburg. In 1756 Count Heinrich von Bünau commissioned him to decorate the newly built Schloss Dahlen.

a Russian Neoclassical sculptor. Orlovsky's statues of Kutuzov and Barclay de Tolly in front of the Kazan Cathedral reveal a realistic undercurrent in his otherwise Neoclassical work, typified by the Angel on top of the Alexander Column at the Palace Square.
