a French novelist, historian and translator. There is very little information available about the details of his life. He received a degree as a medical doctor in Montpellier in 1817, but turned to literature and especially the English literary history. He was a prolific translator, translating the complete works of Lord George Gordon Byron and many works of Charles Dickens, Sheridan, William Makepeace Thackeray and Edward Bulwer-Lytton.
