Of Edinburgh, Scotland. Graduate of the University of Edinburgh. At the age of 22 he was tried for piracy in Newport, Rhode Island, in July, 1723. Acquitted when he proved that he was taken off a prize by Captain Edward Low and forced against his will to act as ship’s surgeon.
