the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1851 to 1856. In the middle of the nineteenth century led the moderate liberals (moderates) in the Lower House. As a member of parliament, he kept well-informed speeches. In 1850 Second Chamber President. As Governor-General he refused to receive Douwes Dekker when he wanted to complain about corruption and abuses. He returned to parliament after he was GG, first as a delegate for Amsterdam for four years and then as senator for Zuid-Holland. In the latter function in 1875 played an important role in a short cabinet crisis.
