a German landscape painter. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. He studied at Carl Koopmann Karlsruhe, and from 1835 to 1837 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, under Cornelius. He traveled in France and Austria, and stayed a couple of years (1838 - 1840 and 1843-1846) in Italy. He spent some time from 1840-1843 at the Academy in Düsseldorf. Amongst his most important works is the cycle of 40 Italian landscapes - now at Munich - that have been compared by some to the famous Rottmann's cycle.
