Born in Seville to a family of lesser nobility. At age 11, began to study art for the next six years. Married in 1618 to Juana Pacheco who bore him two daughters. Moved to Madrid in 1622, quickly secured a position as court painter with king Phillip IV, and lived there (minus two extended trips to Italy) until his death after a fever.
