a Dutch painter. He was especially known for his romantic cityscapes. Van Bommel studied at the State Academy Amsterdam with the landscape painter Andrew Roth. He worked in the style of romanticism. Influenced by Roth himself he initially painted mostly landscapes. He also made river and beach scenes. In 1850, however, he switched to refined elaborate cityscapes, usually with a lot of hustle and liveliness, with a sense of monumentality.
