a Flemish painter. Backereel was born at Antwerp. He is known to have been in Rome between 1639 and 1643. He then returned to his native city, the churches of which once possessed a number of his works. His Adoration of the Shepherds and Vision of St. Felix is in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, and his Hero mourning Leander in the Kunsthistorisches Museum. The date of his death is not recorded.
