a German painter. He was born at Cologne. Having learned the rudiments of painting there, he attended the Academy at Düsseldorf in 1833, but soon afterwards went to Munich, where he became known for his genre paintings, mostly depicting scenes from upper-class life. He has been called a German counterpart of William Hogarth and David Wilkie. He was elected a member of the Academy at Munich in 1853. He died in Munich.
