a French magician who explained his art in a famous book, The White Magic Unveiled in 1784. He was a lawyer, mathematician and held a degree in law. He was attached to the embassy of France to the English Court as interpreter secretary before returning to France in 1783. His book -- among others he wrote -- obtained a great success at the time, as it gives an explanation of all the card tricks, game bags and cups etc. of the era.
