a French librettist, composer and historian. He was born in Paris and guillotined in Paris. Not much information is available about his life. Jean-Philippe Rameau taught him composition, and Antoine Dauvergne taught him the violin. He was a prolific composer of opéras-comiques and songs. He is now remembered for his four-volume Essai sur la musique ancienne and modern (1780)
