the "Father of the Wisconsin Synod" (Evangelical Lutheran) and President (1849–1860). Born in Notzingen, Württemberg. He was imprisoned from March–October 1832 on charge of proselytizing and organizing secret societies. He was sent to America in 1837 as a teacher, which he failed at. He was ordained by New York Ministerium and became a pastor in Rochester, New York, 1838–48; he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in June 1848 as colporteur and founded Grace Lutheran Church in, Milwaukee in 1849, of which he was pastor until his death.
