an Irish language scholar from Ireland. His work on linguistics was recognised in 1848 by the Royal Irish Academy, who awarded him their prestigious Cunningham Medal. O'Donovan made a highly significant contribution to Irish history and literature. He and his wife's brother-in-law, Eugene O'Curry, were the greatest Irish scholars of their time. O'Donovan's work in establishing early Irish law texts, genealogies and folklore is still unsurpassed and frequently relied upon in research.
