a French dramatist, historian, writer, diplomat and translator. He was born near Livarot and died in Nançay. He was Minister of France at Dresden and Regensburg , after which he left the business, settled in Germany , was married and came to finish his last years in his retirement from Berry. His main writings are: Origins, or the Old Government of France, Germany, Italy, etc., The Hague , 1757 , 4 vols. tion 12, 1789 , 3 vols. 8vo; ancient history of the peoples of Europe, Paris , Arnaud and Suard, 1772 , 12 vols. in-12; the elements of the policy in 1773, 6 vols. 8vo; Maxims of monarchical government, 4 vols. 8vo, 1778, and the Letter of a provincial anti-philosopher philosophers of the capital.
