Burgess was a member of Captain William Kidd's crew in 1690 when the Blessed William was seized. In 1693, Edward Coates became captain and the former Captain Burgess left the ship and went to New York. He arrived in April, bought a house and took on a job with Frederick Phillips, New York's wealthiest merchant. Over the next few years Burgess made many profitable voyages to Madagascar selling supplies and guns to pirates in exchange for gold and slaves. Around September 1699, Captain Burgess was in command of the Margaret. Near Saint Mary's Island he ran into a British fleet and was offered a pardon for any piratical activities. Several of Captain Burgess' crew accepted and bought passage home with the fleet. Captain Burgess sailed to Cape Town, South Africa, by December he reached his destination. Captain Lowth, of the East India Company, seized Captain Burgess' ship and took it to Bombay. Lowth also took its treasure and slaves. The owners of the Margaret brought suit against the East India Company and Captain Burgess was taken to London in 1701 and accused of piracy. With Captain Robert Culliford's testimony, Captain Burgess was convicted. Eventually he secured a pardon for his crimes and signed aboard a privateer, sailing for the Pacific. Burgess then became first mate aboard the Neptune and went to Madagascar to trade liquor for slaves. When a sudden storm wrecked the pirates' ships, Burgess helped Captain John Halsey seize the Neptune. Burgess was made Quartermaster but lost it soon after when Captain Halsey died. After losing his position, Burgess stayed at Madagascar, dealing in slaves with David Williams. Following an argument concerning prizes with a black chief, Burgess died of poison, presumably at the chief's hand. .......... born in New York, died in Madagascar. American captain of a pirate. He served in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean. In 1689 he was a member of the crew on the ship SAINTE ROSE, which seized the rebels under the leadership of William Kidd and later renamed it to BLESSED WILLIAM. In February 1690 on the island of Antigua Edward Coates joined Robert Culliford and this ship William Kidd was stolen. Renamed it to Jacob for the captain chose William Mason. In 1691 they stopped in New York at Governor to give them a bribe was forgiven piracy and privateering was put right. Burgess stayed here. He began working for the richest merchant in New York, Frederick Phillips, as captain of the ship MARGARET. They traded with the pirates in Madagascar, selling them weapons and guns for gold and slaves. In April 1693 he bought a house. In December 1699 in Cape Town MARGARET was captured by a cargo of slaves and gold was confiscated Lowth captain of the East India Company. After a stop in Mumbai Burgess was taken to London. At the trial in 1701 was accused of supporting and conducting piracy. It also testified pirate Robert Culliford. After the confession was convicted, but he was granted a pardon with conditions. He was an officer on the ship NEPTUNE and traded slaves and alcohol. After the storm helped wreck, not knowing that it was a pirate John Halsey. They forcibly took part NEPTUNE and her crew went to pirates, including Burgess. He was soon appointed quatermaster officer. In 1708 Captain Halsey died of a fever. Burgess then remained in Madagascar, where he devoted himself to the slave trade. In 1716, after a disagreement with slavers poisoned.
